The 2017 Solar Eclipse frenzy has spread to Chattanooga State Community College. Although the actual eclipse date is Monday, August 21, ChattState has planned a series of activities to celebrate this once in a lifetime event.
With more than 30 years of experience in the science field, Dr. Richard Clements is still excited about it and often has a hard time choosing what he wants to share with his students, “because I don’t want to leave anything out!” he exclaims. Having said that, it seems appropriate that he recently was presented with the Tennessee Science Teachers Association (TSTA) Science Educator of the Year for Higher Education on December 2. The award recognizes leadership roles in promoting science and outstanding contributions to science education that positively impact the community.
Million Women Mentors held the second annual MWM Summit and Gala where over 350 leaders from industry, education, and government came together for a day of learning and celebration.
Chattanooga, TN (June 28, 2016) --- “A collective team effort between faculty, staff, and students resulted in the creation of a solar recharging station that stands ready to provide a renewable energy source for Chattanooga State students. It serves as a ‘green’ alternative to charge or power their phones, laptops, tablets, and other personal devices,” states Tim McGhee, Dean, Engineering and Information Technologies. This solar charging station is located next to the Kolwyck Library.
Chattanooga, TN (February 4, 2016) --- “Faith & Doubt: Science and Religion in the Search for Truth,” a documentary film by David Wollert, an associate professor of biology, will be presented for viewing in the Humanities Theatre on Wednesday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. and again on Thursday, February 18 at 11:00 a.m. The film is free and open to the public.
The film has been well received by both academics and film critics, having won the President's Award at the North Carolina Film Awards. It also was screened at the Louisville International Festival of Film.
Chattanooga, TN --- The recipients of the 2014-15 Mathematics and Sciences Division Excellence Awards at Chattanooga State include Mrs. Toni Fountain, Dr. Evelyn Mobley, Kathleen Majoras, Jana Herron, and Jane Bustabad. In April 2015, Dr. Mosunmola George-Taylor, former division dean, announced the award winners who were selected from a pool of nominees by members of the Division Excellence Award Committee.
Mrs. Jana Herron took the lead in the development of the fully online BIOL-2010 and BIOL-2020 courses. She expended countless hours into developing these online courses that closely mimic the on-ground experience. She created effective videos for students within the courses to assist them in the learning process and further enhance their chance of successful completion of the courses. An initial examination of the grades in these courses is consistent with the rigor of the on-ground experience.
