Barbering

Barbering is a four semester diploma program that requires 1,500 clock hours for completion.

Graduates are prepared to take the barbering licensure exam administered by the Tennessee Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. The program will teach the necessary chemical services, manicure services, facial services, etc. - more than just learning to cut.

About Program

Students, who are interested in pursuing a career in barbering, will receive instruction in personal and shop safety rules and state regulations, sanitation and sterilization standards, and the proper use of equipment and implements commonly found in a barbershop. Additionally, students receive instruction in the anatomy and physiology of hair and scalp, the psychology of sales and first aid.

The barbering program provides students with the necessary skills needed to pass the Tennessee Board of Cosmetology and Barber’s practical and written examinations. The class is available full-time program during the day on the main campus. Students will need four semesters of enrollment to earn the 1,500 clock hours as required by the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners.

The Barbering program covers training in many aspects of hair and skin care. Specialized hair training includes cutting, mustache/beard trimming, designing, styling, permanent waving, relaxing, coloring, lightening, and reconditioning treatments razor cutting and shaving. Instruction in men’s skin care will prepare the student to perform facials and to educate clients concerning personal skin care

Barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers who operate their own salons have managerial duties that may include hiring, supervising, and firing workers, as well as keeping business and inventory records, ordering supplies, and arranging for advertising.

Course Schedule

Students may enroll during the fall, spring or summer term provided space is available. Students who are eligible to enroll will be given an opportunity to register for one of the open seats during the enrollment period for each term.

  • Credit by Examination Fee - The regular course fee is charged for each special examination and must be paid prior to taking the examination. Non-refundable. (See Academic Regulations.)
  • Credit for Life Experience Fees - Assessment Fee for Experiential Learning $45.00.  Experiential Learning Credit $15.00 per credit hour in excess of 3.0 credit hours. $90.00 maximum.
  • High School Equivalency Test (Hi-SET) - $75
  • Placement Test Fees - ACT - $45.00. (Refer to Admissions Policy.)
