This April, Chattanooga State Community College celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Michael P. Hennen Hospitality & Culinary Center—a milestone marking a decade of hands-on learning, student achievement, and career preparation in hospitality and culinary arts.
The center began with an ambitious goal: to create a space where students could gain real-world experience and launch meaningful careers.
Today, that vision has become a reality.
Since its founding, 228 students have completed degrees or certificates, moving into careers and leadership roles in the culinary and hospitality industries.
The center stands as a living tribute to Michael P. Hennen, whose legacy continues to impact students’ futures. During the celebration, his family reflected on what it means to see his name connected to opportunity and student success.
“It matters to come back and remember 10 years of amazing efforts,” said Corinne Hennen, Michael’s mother. “You all matter so much to us. Michael mattered so much to us. This program at Chattanooga State means so much to us. It matters.”
That impact is made possible through continued support from donors, partners, and college leaders who believe in the power of hands-on education. Scholarships, including the Michael P. Hennen Scholarship, have helped remove barriers and open doors for students ready to step into the profession.
Guests at the anniversary celebration enjoyed an array of culinary treats prepared by students and alumni. From chef‑crafted appetizers and savory small bites to scratch‑made desserts, the menu reflected the skill, creativity, and professionalism students develop in the Hennen Center every day.
Culinary Careers Start at Chattanooga State
Inside the center, students learn hands-on hospitality skills from preparing gourmet meals to competing at the highest levels of the hospitality industry. And that approach is delivering results.
Chattanooga State students have earned top honors at SkillsUSA competitions for three consecutive years, demonstrating excellence on both state and national stages.
Shannon Johnson, founding director of the Hennen Center, said studying culinary arts embodies the broader quality of a well-rounded education at ChattState.
“Chefs have to be well versed in math and science. They are engineers when they lay out the kitchen and artists when they plate food,” he said. “That’s what I always wanted this place to represent.”
As the Hennen Center enters its second decade, Chattanooga State continues its commitment to preparing students for success in hospitality and culinary careers through experiential learning, industry partnerships, and excellent faculty.
