why solar

Although the use of solar energy has been around for thousands of years, harnessing its power through solar panels and processed as part of the photovoltaic process has been around for a considerably lesser time. Energy conservationists embrace solar energy for its clean energy economy. Now, solar energy is also available locally and being touted as a way to meet the growing demand for power in a “green” way.

The resurgence of interest in solar energy is one reason that the Solar Energy Technology program at Chattanooga State Community College is experiencing growth. To meet the expected increase of future solar energy engineers, Chattanooga State is hosting a special opportunity called “Why Solar” on Friday, May 4 beginning at 11 a.m.in the Center for Engineering, Technology, Arts and Sciences building (CETAS).

The Engineering and Information Technologies Division will showcase their Solar Energy Technology program and set up solar panels to provide refreshments for participants. This 64-hour credit program would make an ideal career for both TN Reconnect and TN Promise students who are environmentally-focused and seeking a career in the solar power industry focusing on research and development, manufacturing of solar power materials, construction of solar power plants, operation of solar power plants and solar power installation and maintenance. Employment opportunities can be found through public utilities, architectural and engineering consultants, energy management companies, heating and cooling contractors and alternative energy system manufacturers or contractors and retailers. The national annual mean wage exceeds $59,000, while Tennessee’s mean wage average is $53,000 according to O*Net Online.

Local businesses such as Greenspaces and Tennessee Solar Solutions will be at the event to discuss future job opportunities. Graduates of the Solar Energy Technology concentration will possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to make an intelligent entry into the solar power producing industry and have the ability and knowledge to install photovoltaic solar systems according to the National Electrical Code.
