People cutting a ribbon for a new building

Constructing the buildings of the future, programming robotics, and saving lives: These are just a few of the important skills students will learn in the new Rhea County Higher Education Center in Dayton.

Last week, the new facility was formally recognized with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by state, local, and education leaders. The facility expands technical and workforce training in Rhea County, offering additional pathways for students pursuing high-demand, career-focused education while staying close to home.

Governor Bill Lee and local and other leaders gathered to christen the new center, which represents a $20 million investment in workforce development and educational access for the region as part of Governor Lee’s $1 billion TCAT master plan funding. Operated by Chattanooga State Community College—home to the only embedded TCAT in Tennessee—the Center is designed to connect students directly to careers that are in demand now and into the future.

“I am profoundly happy that the people of Rhea County today, and for generations to come, will call the Rhea County Higher Education Center their own,” said Chattanooga State President Dr. Rebecca Ashford.

Career-Focused Programs That Lead to Jobs in Rhea County

The Rhea County Higher Education Center will offer hands-on training in fields that are essential to today’s economy, including:

  • Welding
  • Automation
  • Robotics
  • Electrical
  • Computer Support Technician
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

These programs focus on practical skills employers are actively seeking.

For students, the impact is immediate: shorter pathways to stable, well-paying careers. For families and the broader community, the Center strengthens the local workforce, supports economic growth, and keeps talent close to home.

“This ribbon-cutting represents more than a building. It truly exemplifies TBR’s mission of student success and workforce development. Facilities like this are where students gain the hands-on experience, the industry-aligned training, and the opportunity that fuels our state’s economy and transforms our citizens’ lives,” said Dr. Flora Tydings, TBR Chancellor.

“The best part about today is the students; they are why we do what we do. Their skills and their pursuit of educational attainment will land them a future full of opportunity. At the end of the day, this facility is a step toward providing a better way of life for all Tennesseans,” Lee said.

Community Impact Meets Education Close to Home

By offering high-quality technical education locally, the Rhea County Higher Education Center helps remove barriers to education and creates new possibilities for students of all ages. The Center embodies ChattState's commitment to opportunity.

A Spring Grand Opening will soon invite current and prospective students, local employers, and community members to tour the facility, learn about programs, and see firsthand how the Center is shaping the future of workforce training in Rhea County.
