If I am sexually assaulted or sexually harassed, what should I do?

I am a faculty/staff member and a member of our campus community has reported to me that they have been sexually assaulted or sexually harassed. What should I do?
Answer: 

As a Chattanooga State employee you are legally REQUIRED to report any incident of sexual violence, dating violence, domestic violence, or stalking that you are made aware of to the Dean of Student Affairs, Sandy Rutter at (423) 697-4475 or (423) 994-5500 or to the Title IX Coordinator, Brian Evans at (423) 697-2417.

As a faculty/staff member, how should I respond to someone who has a complaint?
Answer: 

Assure the complainant that their situation will be handled sensitively. Listen and be understanding and compassionate. If the complainant is in distress, offer to contact specific resources for them immediately. If the complainant is unsure about what to do, explain to them that by making a report to police or to the Office of the Dean of Students will not obligate them to take any actions. It is important to inform the complainant that they will have control over the process, and that the people involved will respect their wishes as much as possible only involving those that will need to be informed of the matter.

Answer: 

Take them seriously, listen, and be compassionate. Advise the complainant to not clean up (shower, brush teeth, change clothes, etc.). Advise the complainant to go to the hospital emergency room or to a local health facility. Advise the complainant that they have choices for reporting sexual violence.  The complainant can contact Campus Police at (423) 697-4467 if they would like to take criminal actions. The complainant may want to take actions with the College. They can do so by contacting the Office of the Dean of Students, Sandy Rutter at (423) 697-4475 or (423) 994-5500.
