Welcome to Disabilities Support Services at Chattanooga State!

DSS serves as:

  • A liaison and an advocate for students with disabilities
  • An information center for the campus community by providing pertinent information for equal educational opportunities of individuals with disabilities
Students may be referred to DSS by:
  • Self-identification
  • Instructor
  • Staff member
  • Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Any other organization or individual with knowledge of the student's disabling condition(s

Chattanooga State Community College complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. It states that "no qualified individual with a disability shall, because of that disability, be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the services, programs, or activities of a public entity, or be subjected to discrimination by such entity, providing the individual is otherwise qualified."

According to ADA guidelines, "disability" is defined as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities, a record of such an impairment, or being regarded as having such an impairment.

"Major life activities" is defined as those basic activities that the average person in the general population can perform with little or no difficulty. Major life activities include:

  • caring for oneself
  • performing manual tasks
  • walking
  • seeing
  • hearing
  • speaking
  • breathing
  • learning
  • working
