Faculty Roles and Responsibilities
The academic departments are responsible for developing educational practices
that provide equal educational access to qualified students with disabilities
and to utilize teaching and evaluation methods that measure knowledge of course
content and skills during tests or examinations, rather than measuring the
presence of a disability. Responsibilities include:
Determine learning goals and objectives for each course and academic program,
the essential elements of the course and curriculum, and determine how learning
outcomes will be assessed for all students. Faculty are neither required nor
expected to lower academic standards nor fundamentally alter the essential
elements of the course or program to accommodate students.
- Include a statement on the course syllabus that advises students with
disabilities to register with Disabilities Support Services (DSS) if they think
they may require academic accommodations.
- Refer a student who self-discloses as a person with a disability to DSS.
- Maintain the student’s confidentiality in all matters related to the
disability.
- Consult with the student and DSS staff if accommodation requests seem
inappropriate. This allows all parties to seek out alternative measures that do
not impact the course integrity but would allow the student to demonstrate his
knowledge of the course content.
- Participate in training and educational opportunities to learn and maintain
awareness of access and accommodation issues.
- Work to ensure that all electronic instructional material is in an accessible
format.
