Questions and Answers

“Why should I go to a counselor?”

If you feel confused, need help in making some choices, or want to change something in your life, talking to a counselor is a good idea.  Counselors are trained professionals with expertise in helping you deal with personal, career and educational concerns.  They are aware of college and community resources that may benefit you.

“How can counselors help me?”

A counselor’s role is to help you help yourself.  Counselors use their training and experience to help you identify your needs and concerns.  They can clarify options and help you decide on appropriate strategies.  Most important, a counselor can provide support and perspective.

“What happens in counseling?”

When you see a counselor you simply talk about whatever is of concern to you.  The counselor is likely to ask you questions to help you fully explore the issue.  If you feel awkward about talking, the counselor will help you over the rough spots.  Counselors use a variety of counseling methods such as relaxation, assertiveness training, or practicing new behaviors.  In some situations, past events that are still affecting you today may be discussed.  You can choose to work with a counselor in an individual or group setting.

“Must I have a specific problem?”

No!  Sometimes just talking about thoughts and feelings can be helpful.  Counselors are objective, active listeners who can help you clarify your concerns.

“Will anyone know what is said?”

Building trust and confidence is a very important part of the counseling relationship. Any meeting between you and a counselor is considered confidential .  However, counselors are required by law and professional rules to report any cases where they feel physical harm may occur to you or others.

“How long will it take?”

That depends on you and the type of problem or concern.  Sometimes you can learn to deal with a problem after talking with the counselor a few times, or just once.  Other times you and the counselor may decide to meet the entire semester.  For others the bets approach may be a referral to a counselor in the community for long-term therapy.

“How do I begin?”
