“Why should I go to a
counselor?”
If you feel confused, need help in making some choices, or want to change
something in your life, talking to a counselor is a good idea. Counselors are trained professionals with
expertise in helping you deal with personal, career and educational concerns. They are aware of college and community resources
that may benefit you.
“How can
counselors help me?”
A counselor’s role is to help you help yourself. Counselors use their training and experience to
help you identify your needs and concerns. They
can clarify options and help you decide on appropriate strategies. Most important, a counselor can provide support
and perspective.
“What
happens in counseling?”
When you see a counselor you simply talk about whatever is of concern to you. The counselor is likely to ask you questions to
help you fully explore the issue. If you feel
awkward about talking, the counselor will help you over the rough spots. Counselors use a variety of counseling methods
such as relaxation, assertiveness training, or practicing new behaviors. In some situations, past events that are still
affecting you today may be discussed. You can
choose to work with a counselor in an individual or group setting.
“Must I
have a specific problem?”
No! Sometimes just talking about
thoughts and feelings can be helpful. Counselors
are objective, active listeners who can help you clarify your concerns.
“Will
anyone know what is said?”
Building trust and confidence is a very important part of the counseling
relationship. Any meeting between you and a counselor is considered
confidential
. However, counselors are
required by law and professional rules to report any cases where they feel physical harm
may occur to you or others.
“How long
will it take?” That depends on you and the type of problem or concern. Sometimes you can learn to deal with a problem
after talking with the counselor a few times, or just once.
Other times you and the counselor may decide to meet the entire semester. For others the bets approach may be a referral to
a counselor in the community for long-term therapy.
“How do I
begin?” Counseling services, a component of Student Services, are available in Room 235 in
the Student Center. These services are free
to all students. Counseling is offered on an
appointment basis. Call 697-4421 for details.
It’s common to feel a little uneasy the first time you
see a counselor. It gets easier. Just take that first step. |
