Physical Education

Courses Offered

The Physical Education Department offers two programs for those students interested in careers in the areas of Physical Education and Wellness.  To meet the growing interest of our community in healthy living and fitness, the Physical Education Department has expanded in many new directions. For years we offered primarily activity courses however, with the addition of specialized faculty and staff members we have expanded. The Physical Education and Wellness Programs offer a variety of courses taught at the numerous Chattanooga State CC sites.  Some of the new courses include a series of self-defense classes, yoga, individual and team sports.  The department's expansion plans do not stop here. We are currently expanding our Wellness Program.  A student may take a total of four additional hours of PE classes used to fill elective hours for graduation.

Physical Education --- Activity Courses

Physical Education Activity courses meet 2 hours per week for each semester
hour of credit.  To encourage students to develop and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle, designated Physical Education Activity Courses are repeatable for credit, but no more than 6 hours (in any combination) may be applied toward a
degree. Each course has a maximum limit as well (see course description).

Adaptive Physical Education

Students with Adaptive Physical Education needs may enroll in any of a
number of regular Physical Education activity classes. These classes
routinely begin with evaluation of each student's physical profile and
establish a personalized training or conditioning program based on the individual's needs. A wide range of adaptations may be implemented, limited
by considerations of the student's personal safety and abilities and reasonable and appropriate use of the College's equipment and facilities.

Fitness Center Policy on Student Use:

  • The Fitness Center is primarily for the use of the PE physical activity classes, the Chattanooga State CC athletic teams, and Chattanooga State CC faculty and staff. This is because of the high volume of students that we serve in these classes and the number of classes that we offer. Student safety is also a concern.
  • The Fitness Center is not open for students to use UNLESS they are enrolled in either PHED 1130 - Fitness for Living or PHED 1120 - Strength and Conditioning. Students enrolled in these classes may use the fitness center during their regularly scheduled classes and on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
  • Students wishing to use the Fitness Center regularly should sign up for either PHED 1130  or PHED 1120 every semester. They can earn up to 4 credit hours - after that, they can sign up as an AUDIT and continue to work out with the class without receiving a grade.
  • Any student that is already taking a full load (12 credit hours or more) will not pay any additional fee for adding the PHED 1120 or PHED 1130 class as an audit or for credit.
  • So - sign up for either PHED 1120 or PHED 1130 and work out regularly!!!
