Creative Writing Classes
- ENGL 2830 Introduction to Creative Writing

An introductory class in creative writing techniques, this class will focus on various elements of creative writing common to fiction, poetry, drama, and even creative non-fiction. The class will emphasize practical applications of these creative techniques, particularly in short fiction. This class is offered fall and spring terms, depending on enrollment.

This class will provide instruction and practice in writing and understanding poetry. Students will analyze and practice various aspects of poetry. Students will also analyze and discuss their own works and analyze, discuss, and critique representative works by writers, traditional and contemporary. This class is offered fall terms, depending on enrollment.

- ART 1400 Beginning Photography

Introduction to the darkroom, photography as art, significant historical and contemporary photographs; emphasizes camera work and aesthetics of an image; must provide own 35mm camera.
- ART 2410 Photo and Darkroom I

Fine art approach to photography; darkroom work and oral critiques; must provide own 35mm camera; Black and white photography and printing; image, personal symbolism, avant garde composition, content, and photographs as art statements.
- ART 2420 Photo and Darkroom II

Photography as expressive communication and art; creative approach to lighting methods, camera and paper use, film type, developing, enlarging, and mounting; focus on personal imagery and content; darkroom work and oral critiques; must provide own 35 mm camera. Prereq: ART 2410.
- ART 2430 Color Photography

Intro to techniques and theory of color photographic process; processing slides, negative film, and color printing; design, competition, and perceptual aspects of color; focus on creative experience; Prereq: ART 2410
- ART 2450 Digital Photography I

Fine art approach to digital imaging; Basic techniques, equipment, trends and processes used in creating imagery as personal expression. Basic computer experience and digital camera required.
Continuing Education (non-credit classes)
Chattanooga State also offers a variety of continuing education classes related to writing and photography. Past classes have covered topics such as travel writing, writing memoirs, publishing guidelines and critiques, penetrating various writing markets, home business copyediting, and so on.
