Associate of Science in Teaching (AST) Degree Requirements

The Associate of Science in Teaching (AST) degree with a K-6 emphasis provides a seamless transition from a Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) community college to a TBR university. Chattanooga State students who earn the AST will have fulfilled the general freshman and sophomore requirements to enter a TBR university teacher education program and pursue a baccalaureate degree and licensure in elementary education. The requirements for the AST include:

  • Completion of required coursework for the AST degree requirements with a “C” or better in all courses
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 for all college level work
  • ACT score of 22 or SAT score of 1020 or Praxis I tests scores of Reading >174, Writing >173, and Mathematics >173
  • Satisfactory ratings on an index of suitability for the teaching profession

Transfer Information

In order to transfer to a TBR university teacher education program, the student will also need to complete any other requirements for admission to the program such as an application, a criminal background check, and an interview. Admission to the TBR university teacher education programs is typically only fall-entry.

East Campus:  Center for Education and Human Services (CEHS)

The Center of Education and Human Services presents students with the opportunity to earn both the AST degree with a K-6 emphasis and the baccalaureate degree in elementary education at its campus. The Center offers all coursework for the AST degree through Chattanooga State and for the baccalaureate degree through Tennessee Technological University (TTU). Therefore, students who are interested in pursuing all four years of their elementary education degree are able to do so at the one Chattanooga State campus location. Additionally, TTU teaches graduate level courses each semester at the center.
