Health Information Management

The health information management program (traditional day program) prepares the student to become a health information technician (HIT). HITs must be proficient in both technical and supervisory skills. The HIT performs functions including information and data analysis; records system development maintenance, and retention; compiling health statistics and required reporting; coding and abstracting diseases and operations; assignment of MS-DRGs; protecting the confidentiality of health records in compliance with federal and state regulations, releasing of health records in compliance with federal and state regulations; and assisting the medical staff in performance improvement and research.

Primary office duties are performed with minimal contact with patients. The program consists of a combination of classroom, laboratory, and professional practice. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Students who graduate are eligible to sit for a certification exam and earn the RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) credential, which is nationally recognized, and a requirement for many positions.

The program consists of a combination of classroom, laboratory, and professional practice designed to meet the requirements for an associate degree based on standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
