The Chattanooga State Commercial
Truck Driving Program is designed to meet the needs of the trucking industry.
The program stresses the basic training principles and skills required to
operate commercial motor vehicles of all types, sizes and under all driving
conditions. Students receive specialized training on the safe operation of a
trailer including loading, unloading and docking. Students also receive
classroom training on all federal, state and local laws.
The Commercial Truck Driving Program is a seven week program that meets Monday
through Friday from 8:00am until 2:30pm (216 hours). During the seven weeks,
students will log a minimum of 300 driving miles on highway and city roads.
Currently, the job placement rate is 100%, and beginning drivers can expect to
earn $30,000 to $35,000, which may be supplemented with safety bonuses and other
incentives that are offered by a number of companies.
The cost to enroll in the Commercial Truck Driving program for the 2008-09 year
is $1,206 and Tennessee residents are encourage to apply for the Wilder-Naifeh
Technical Skills Grant (WNTSG) by completing a FAFSA online. Prospective
students are encouraged to contact the Chattanooga State Financial Aid office at
697-4402 for additional information about the Wilder-Naifeh Grant.
To enroll in the Commercial Truck Driving Program, students must:
be at least 21 years of age;
submit an admissions application to Chattanooga State and pay the $15
application fee;
earn a passing score on the COMPASS Diagnostic test that is required for admission into
the Tennessee Technology Center;
pass a DOT physical and drug test;
not have had a DUI or DWI within the past five years;
secure a Class A driving permit and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) before
attending class
(the MVR may be obtained from the Drivers License Center on Bonny Oaks Drive).
