air conditionerAir conditioning and refrigeration systems are highly complex, requiring more than a single machine. They are sophisticated systems of interlocking machines that produce cooling. For example, air conditioning systems require fans, compressors, condensers, and evaporators to cool and dehumidify the air. Metal and fiberglass ducts or special piping distribute the treated air through the building. Technicians specializing in this field must be able to work with the complete system and many specialize in a give area: installation, repair, residential, commercial, etc.

In Chattanooga State's air conditioning and refrigeration program, classroom and shop learning experiences are concerned with the domestic, commercial, and industrial air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The students also learn about the different heating systems, gas, oil, electric, and solar, and heat pump systems. The course includes the theory, application, operation, and maintenance of systems, combined with intensive hands-on instruction. Instructional units covered are:

Graduates find career opportunities as an Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Technician; Sales, Retail, and Wholesale; Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Installer; Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Maintenance; Air Conditioning/ Refrigeration Service; Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Engineer Helper; or Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Operator.
