Admission Test Information

The Nurse Entrance Test (NET) is a proven diagnostic test that assists nursing education programs in evaluating both academic and social skills of practical nursing and surgical technology program applicants. At Chattanooga State, the NET test provides a common basis for the evaluation of academic abilities of individuals interested in the Practical Nursing/ Surgical Technology Programs.

What is on the Test?

Math: Evaluates ability to perform basic operations from general math through basic algebra, including whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percent, number sequence conversions and algebraic equations.

Reading Rate: Estimates the words per minute that the applicant can read when placed in a test or study situation.

Reading Comprehension: Evaluates success with reading comprehension of science-related materials.

The average of the math and reading test scores is used in the selection process.

Four remaining sections provide information that is used to counsel and advise students. These sections include social interaction profile, stress level profile, learning styles and test-taking skills.

How Can I Prepare for the Test?

Since the NET Test is a test of general knowledge, it is difficult to “study” for the test. Activities that might help include:

  • Use of review books for ACT, SAT or GED tests. These books provide help with reading comprehension, prefixes, suffixes and roots of words to help with vocabulary and a general math review. A little time spent in review of math concepts is usually extremely helpful.

  • Use a NET Study Guide. The guide provides information concerning what is on the NET and how best to prepare to take the test. Practice tests modeled after the actual NET are also included. Study Guides are available:
