What is Engineering?

Engineers are problem solvers -- people who make things work better, more efficiently, quicker and less expensively.  They serve humanity with skill and dedication and search for better ways to solve problems.

The engineer has a strong science, mathematics and technology background and is a team leader.  Engineers plan, design and supervise engineering projects from concept to completion.

Engineering is a difficult major.  It requires a considerable amount of time and energy...but the rewards are worth it.  Engineers today work on tomorrow's problems.  There are dozens of engineering specialties from which to choose.  Each can begin at Chattanooga State.

What are some other available options?

Today's industry requires the teamwork of engineers, technologists, technicians, and skilled workers.  The engineer provides the system design and technical management.  The technician and technologist provide the practical, hands-on, expertise.  Each can begin at Chattanooga State.

How long will it take to get a degree?

The engineer will require 4 to 5 years of college, the first two years can be taken at Chattanooga State.  The technologist will also require 4 years of college, but the technologist will not need as much math as the engineer, instead the technologist will learn more hands-on applications.  The first two years can be taken at Chattanooga State.  The technician requires 2 years of college, and this can be completed at Chattanooga State.

What is the expected salary range?

The salary range for any member of the industry team will vary depending upon where you choose to live, and your responsibilities.  Junior level engineers will typically earn $45k-55k/year*, technologist $35k-45k/year, and technicians $25k-35k/year.

*National Association of Colleges and Employers, Year 2000 survey.

Is it worth the effort?

To achieve the challenging and rewarding position as an engineer, technologist, or technician, you must first be convinced of the appropriateness of your goal.  Consider the following three important elements:  occupational satisfaction, availability of employment, and salary potential.
