Electricity generated from renewable resources is one of the fastest growing segments in the electrical power industry. Wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear energy, while important, may not fill the global demand for energy. Solar power is the one energy resource that can fill this need. It is environmentally clean, the technology is within our grasp, and once established, will provide a cheap electrical power source. A well-trained workforce in solar energy will be necessary to meet the future demand of a clean, reliable, and inexpensive source of power. Currently, there are very few two-year community colleges or technical colleges who offer Solar Energy Technology A.A.S. educational degrees or training within the United States. However, the solar power industry has in recent years realized a growing demand for services, with manufacturers and suppliers expanding their capabilities to meet this increased demand.
Upon successful completion of the A.A.S. in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology – Solar Energy Technology concentration, graduates will possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make an intelligent entry into the solar power producing industry. Outcomes will include the ability and knowledge to install photovoltaic solar systems according to National Electrical Code. Students will train in the design of solar systems, components, equipment subsystems, and installations. Training will include safety, basic installations, and connecting a PV system to the electrical grid.
