Mission Statement:

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program mission statement is to be the preferred provider of mechanical technicians in the greater Chattanooga economic region who have a strong engineering background and are prepared to work in a dynamic work environment where technology is continually changing.

Program Educational Objectives:

In support of the program mission statement, the three educational objectives for the Mechanical Engineering Technology program are as follows:

  1. Graduates will have a strong foundation of scientific and technical knowledge and hands-on experience to be equipped with critical thinking skills, a working knowledge of computer applications and management software tools , an appreciation for teamwork, and effective communication skills required for mechanical engineering technicians.
  2. Graduates will meet or exceed entry-level standards for mechanical engineering technicians with technical service firms in local or regional industries or government agencies. 
  3. Graduates will recognize the importance of professional development, continued learning, service to the local and global communities and will engage in discipline-specific organizations that foster these opportunities.

Student Outcomes:

Upon graduating from the Engineering Technology Division, students will demonstrate:

a.  an ability to apply the knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of the discipline to narrowly defined engineering technology activities
b.  an ability to apply a knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to engineering technology problems that require limited application of principles but extensive practical knowledge
c.  an ability to conduct standard tests and measurements, and to conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments
d.  an ability to function effectively as a member of a technical team
e.  an ability to identify, analyze, and solve narrowly defined engineering technology problems
f.  an ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in both technical and nontechnical environments, and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature
g.  an understanding of the need for and an ability to engage in self-directed continuing professional development
h.  an understanding of and a commitment to address professional and ethical responsibilities, including a respect for diversity
i.  a commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement
j.  an ability to apply mechanical engineering principles to the specification, installation, fabrication, test, operation maintenance, sales, or documentation of basic mechanical systems.
