The Kansas (Cost) Study is a national study of community college instructional cost and productivity. The study provides Chattanooga State the opportunity to compare our institution's cost per credit hour for selected academic disciplines with other community colleges and peer groups across the nation. Chattanooga State receives National Benchmark reports by disciplines in which five or more institutions have participated and provided data. We can also benchmark our data against a Custom Peer Group of our choosing. Annual participation is required by THEC under the umbrella of Performance Funding practices.

CCSSE's survey instrument, The Community College Student Report , provides information on student engagement, a key indicator of learning and, therefore, of the quality of community colleges. The survey , administered to community college students, asks questions that assess institutional practices and student behaviors that are correlated highly with student learning and student retention. It is assumed that high student engagement correlates with student retention and persistence to graduation. The Community College Student Report is a versatile, research-based tool appropriate for multiple uses. It is a benchmarking instrument establishing national norms on educational practice and performance by community and technical colleges. A diagnostic tool identifying areas in which a college can enhance students' educational experiences and a monitoring device documenting and improving institutional effectiveness over time. Chattanooga State participates in the CCSSE administration on a schedule designated by THEC. Participation as scheduled is required under the Performance Funding umbrella.
