About CDE Courses
For a list of classes available for: CDE Online Summer 2008, CDE Online Fall 2008 . This semester’s calendar is here. For course descriptions please consult the CSTCC catalog.

Chattanooga State’s Center for Distributed Education provides courses through several modes. A section number determines the type of course. Course numbers that end with 97F, 97L, 97X, 971, 972 or 973 are online courses provided by Chattanooga State. For instance, ENGL1010 971 is an online course since it has the 971 ending. Online courses are provided over the internet through CSTCC’s learning management system, eLearn.

Course numbers ending in 991, 992 or 993 are directed studies courses provided by Chattanooga State. For instance, MUS 1040 991 is a directed studies course since it has the 991 ending. Directed studies courses are courses that may include the use of videotapes, CDs or DVDs instead of classroom lectures. Some of these courses may only require a textbook and/or a study guide.

Course numbers that end in R50 are courses provided by the Tennessee Board of Regents RODP program. For instance, HIST2010 R50 is a course provided by RODP. For additional information about RODP courses please contact Chattanooga State’s Diane Norris at 697-3107 or visit the RODP website.

Things to consider before taking an online or directed studies course:
Since online and directed studies courses are non-traditional ways of learning there are a few things you may want to consider before taking one. One major consideration is whether or not you have the technology needed to access the material you will have to access. You may need a VCR, DVD player or computer depending on the course. If you take an online course, you need to have access to a computer that connects to the internet!

You may also want to consider whether you can effectively do well in a class with non-traditional ways of communicating. Some students do better in courses with face-to-face interaction with an instructor. Understand that in a directed studies or online course you will still communicate with your instructor but it will likely be through email, written correspondence or phone calls. As a student, is this compatible with your learning style?

Also, if you decide to take an online or directed studies course, you will need discipline and self-motivation to do well in the course. These type of classes expect the student to be mature enough to meet assignment deadlines without being reminded and complete the course in the required time. If you have trouble motivating yourself then you may want to consider taking the course in a classroom.

What to do if you have a directed studies course:
At the start of the semester, you will need to pick up material from our office in order to begin class. You should bring your class schedule from registration with you, along with a photo ID, to our office (Amnicola campus, IMC building room 206) during our regular business hours. We will provide you with a course syllabus and other materials you will need for the course you are taking. Most likely, you will also need to purchase textbook(s) from either the CSTCC bookstore or another source (CDE does not sell or provide textbooks). You will also need access to the proper technology, such as a VCR, DVD player or computer, to view CDE-provided material.

What to do if you have an online course:
After you have registered, online classes are available beginning the first day of each semester. Some classes may have a flex schedule and may begin later. You should go here to log in to eLearn Information about your online class and instructor, including your course syllabus and textbook information, will be inside your eLearn course.
