A Note From Rex Knowles and Sherry Landrum

This past September marked the start of the second year of the Professional Actor Training Program at Chattanooga State. Our first year exceeded our expectations on many levels. Our students came from all over the United States. The quality of work equalled that of students in the premiere acting programs in New York. The commitment to the intense training accelerated the students' acquisition of skills and techniques needed to compete in today's market. But perhaps the most rewarding and objective outcome of our inagural year training was that four of our students were hired by professional acting companies for the summer. We are confident that you can significantly enhance your craft and optimize your chances for success in this demanding field by studying at Chattanooga State.
Our training program is both intense and supportive. The curriculum and style are modeled after The New Actors Workshop, a training program in New York City founded by George Morrison, Mike Nichols, and Paul Sills. For 10 years, we taught and administered the program at The New Actors Workshop and were mentored by these three theatre visionaries. We bring their work to this training and, equally important, we bring the conceptual models with which they frame the work. In addition, we offer our own techniques developed over 25 years of teaching.
The intense training is accelerated by our supportive atmosphere. True learning emerges not from a fearful response to authoritarian demands that is common in most professional training programs, but from a courageous exploration of the craft led by skilled, patient teachers who guide you into becoming an autonomous, spontaneous, self-reflective artist.

We look forward to working with you.
