Thinks to Consider as You Think About College | Making the Transition from High School to College for Students with Disabilities | Middle College High School Students with Disabilities

Things to Consider as You Think about College

College is not for everyone, but for students who have the motivation and drive to move on toward a career, it can be one of the most exciting times in a person’s life. Still, there are things that you might want to think about as you are looking at college as an option:

  • Do I have reliable transportation that will get me to and from school EVERY day?
  • Am I in reasonably good health so that I can attend class every day?
  • Am I responsible enough to make it to class every day, participate in an appropriate manner, and follow through with completing my homework assignments?
  • Can I ask for help when I need it?
  • Do I have a sense of where I want to be in 10 years?
  • Do I have a pretty solid picture of what career I want to pursue?
  • Do I have the support of my friends and family?
  • Do I understand my disability well enough that I can advocate for myself when needed?
  • Do I have fairly well developed study habits, test-taking skills, organizational skills, and time management skills?
  • Have I considered how I will pay for college, including books, supplies, and any equipment that I may need to purchase?
  • (If you have young children) Can I arrange reliable child care?
  • Do I know when and where I will study?
  • Can I handle the work load from school on top of everything else I have going on in my life (maybe attending part-time would be a better option)?

Students with Disabilities in Middle College High School

Students with disabilities who wish to enter Middle College High School must meet the same admissions requirements as all other students going into the program. It is important to remember that Middle College High School is a placement of choice on the part of the student and his parents; it is not a legally mandated placement. Because of this, the student no longer receives special education services from the public school system. Instead, the student must meet the same eligibility requirements, including documentation requirements, demonstration of functional limitations, and the ability to perform academically, emotionally, and socially at the same level as his college-aged peers.

Also, please review the section on disciplinary offenses for information related to students who cause disruptions on the campus. This represents a significant change from disciplinary procedures in K-12 for students with disabilities.

Students needing accommodations on the residual ACT are referred to that section for more information about what is needed to receive accommodations.
