Retroactive Accommodations
Disabilities Support Services (DSS) is not able to “fix” problems that happened
before the student registered with the office. This is why it is important for
students to make contact with DSS as early in the semester as possible.
Accommodations cannot be made for something that has already occurred. Poor test
scores, missed classes or assignments – students are not allowed to wipe those
things off the record and start fresh once they register with DSS. Students
requesting accommodations late in the semester should realize that it may not be
possible to salvage a passing grade at that point, and should make a
determination as to whether it would be better to stay in the class even though
they may fail, just to gain as much knowledge as possible, or withdraw and try
again next semester.
Retroactive Withdrawals
The College sets a withdrawal deadline that typically falls late in each
semester. Students who are in danger of failing, or who have chronic health or
other personal issues that have interfered with the learning process should be
aware of that deadline so they can apply for a withdrawal before the deadline
has passed. Only in very rare circumstances is a request for withdrawal after
the deadline allowed, and it must be approved by the Vice President of Academic
Affairs. There must be sufficient documentation (medical, legal, or otherwise)
provided by the student to warrant consideration of the late withdrawal. It is
important that students go through the withdrawal process rather than just stop
attending classes. A “W” will appear on transcripts for classes from which a
student has withdrawn, and this will not affect the student’s overall GPA. If
the student simply stops attending class, the final grade will be an “F,” which
does have an impact
