About the Phoenix

The Phoenix is Chattanooga State's Art and Literary publication. Begun in 1982, the primary purpose of the Phoenix is to showcase the best work of Chattanooga State students.

The Phoenix publishes yearly following an academic year. The Phoenix publishes short fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and black and white photography.

Works are typically selected for submission by the student editor(s) under the leadership of the faculty advisors. About 25% of all submissions are selected for inclusion, but this varies each year based on the number and quality of submissions. Students taking campus creative writing classes are generally required to submit to the Phoenix although their is no grade requirement that their submissions be accepted for publication.

In addition to student work, the Phoenix also publishes submissions by Chattanooga State faculty, staff, and alumni although preference is given to student work.

In the past, the Phoenix has also published submissions from members of the Chattanooga region, but, again, preference is given to student work.
