Chattanooga State offers a comprehensive music program designed to meet your educational needs, whether you are preparing to earn a music degree, pursuing individual instruction in a specific instrument, or seeking to meet general education requirements. We offer both freshman and sophomore music courses required by most colleges and universities for their music degree programs, and are supported by a qualified and diverse fulltime and adjunct music faculty.
Music Appreciation: Study of the development of music from the Middle Ages to the present, designed to give a better understanding and appreciation of traditional art music as well as music of our present time. History of Rock and Roll: Study of the development of rock and roll by musical analysis, style comparison and coverage of the performers and their music's impact.
Fundamentals of Music: Study of basic music elements: scales, intervals, triads, meter, note values, rhythm, notation and simple keyboard harmony.
Electronic Music I and II: A sequence of courses featuring a hands-on approach to music applications and computers, sound devices and MIDI programming techniques.
Chattanooga State offers group & individual instruction, for both majors and nonmajors


Students can choose from a diverse selection of both vocal and instrumentalperforming ensembles.
The following courses are offered for music majors intending to transfer to a four year college or university. Students should consult articulation agreements, course catalogs, and advisors for a listing of courses required by the four year institution for graduation.
Music scholarships are awarded annually to recognize excellence in musical performance and academic achievement. Auditions for these scholarships should be scheduled through the office of the director of choral activities, (423)697-3383.

In addition to the fulltime faculty, the music department at Chattanooga State is supported by qualified adjunct instructiors who teach in areas that range from private instruction and performing ensembles to special topics relating to various applications of music business and technology.
