Music at Chattanooga State
Chattanooga State offers a comprehensive music program designed to meet your educational needs, whether you are preparing to earn a music degree, pursuing individual instruction in a specific instrument, or seeking to meet general education requirements. We offer both freshman and sophomore music courses required by most colleges and universities for their music degree programs, and are supported by a qualified and diverse fulltime and adjunct music faculty.
General Music Courses
Music Appreciation: Study of the development of music from the Middle Ages to the present, designed to give a better understanding and appreciation of traditional art music as well as music of our present time. History of Rock and Roll: Study of the development of rock and roll by musical analysis, style comparison and coverage of the performers and their music's impact.
Fundamentals of Music: Study of basic music elements: scales, intervals, triads, meter, note values, rhythm, notation and simple keyboard harmony.
Electronic Music I and II: A sequence of courses featuring a hands-on approach to music applications and computers, sound devices and MIDI programming techniques.

Performing Ensembles
Students can choose from a diverse selection of both vocal and instrumentalperforming ensembles.
- Concert Choir: Performance of choral literature, open to all students.
- Chorale: A vocal ensemble performing a diverse mix of classical and sacred choral literature, by audition only.
- Jazz Vocal Ensemble: A vocal ensemble performing standard and contemporary jazz literature, by audition only.
- Musical Theater: An ensemble performing fully staged works of musicals,operettas, and individual scene studies, by audition only.
- Gospel Choir: A choral group performing music of an inspirational and spiritual nature, open to all students.
- Jazz Band: Performance of big band, jazzrock and Dixieland styles, open to all students.
Core Courses
The following courses are offered for music majors intending to transfer to a four year college or university. Students should consult articulation agreements, course catalogs, and advisors for a listing of courses required by the four year institution for graduation.
- Artist in Residence: Visiting musical artists interact with students in lectures and various workshops.
- Music Seminar: Opportunities for students to perform and attend concerts and recitals on various musical topics.
- Music Theory I-IV: A comprehensive approach to the study of melody, counterpoint, diatonic and chromatic harmony, basic instrumentation and aural skills.
- Sightreading and Ear Training I-IV: Studies in sightreading and aural dictation, designed as a practical application of music theory.
Scholarships
Music scholarships are awarded annually to recognize excellence in musical performance and academic achievement. Auditions for these scholarships should be scheduled through the office of the director of choral activities, (423)697-3383.
Facilities
- 300 seat concert theatre with hightech lighting and sound equipment for a diverse roster of concerts and musical productions.
- 10 station multifunctional piano lab equipped with Yamaha electronic keyboards.
- Coming FALL 2005! Six station electronic music lab with state of the art Macintosh computers, each outfitted for automated MIDI production and recording capabilities.
