This free software allows users to view pdf files, a popular document format on the web and used on several Chattanooga State web sites.
If you have trouble opening PDF files because you have an older computer or a dialup connection, try using Cool PDF reader which can load PDFs faster.
iTunes is a free program for downloading mp3 files. Some teachers are podcasting mp3 files for their students.
Windows Media Player can read and play audio and video content on the web.
Only the RealOne Basic Player is free. Like Windows Media Player, RealOne Player also plays audio and video content.
Real Alternative can be used instead of RealOne Player. The advantage is that the program is smaller and does not include advertising.
QuickTime is another free media viewer for the web.
IrfanView is a freeware all purpose graphics viewer.
"The Works 6.0 Converter allows you to convert word processor documents created in Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other Works programs. Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and Word 2002, 2000, and 97."
CoffeeCup Free Zip Wizard is a free program to open or create zipfiles (files which have been compressed to make downloads quicker--have an extension of .zip).
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition gives the home user basic free virus protection. If your home computer does not have a virus program installed, you may want to try AVG. Do not install AVG if another virus program is installed. The Free Edition is linked from the side menu.
AdAware SE is a free program for personal use that removes spyware and other tracking software from your computer. Professional and more powerful versions are available for purchase from the LavaSoft web site.
AbiWord is a free word processing similar to Microsoft Word©. If you do not have a word processor on your home computer and you cannot afford the student versions of MSOffice© or WordPerfect©, especially if you have been using WordPad as your word processor, you might consider AbiWord.
OpenOffice is a suite of programs similar to Microsoft Office or Corel Suite. It includes a word processor, spreadsheet program, multimedia presentation software, drawing program, and database program. A donation is requested but not required for use of the program.
"The BullZip PDF Printer [freeware] works as a Microsoft Windows printer and allows you to write PDF documents from virtually any Microsoft Windows application." With this program, any file can be converted to PDF. Be sure to read the complete download and installation instructions.
This program, free for home use, will filter spam before it is downloaded to Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Mozilla, and several other e-mail programs.
Serif is offering several earlier versions of its software free for downloads. Included are a web design program, a page design program (for brochures, newsletters, and so on), a photo editing program, a 3D image program, and a drawing program.
This site has tutorials for Microsoft Office, Outlook, FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Desire2Learn, Windows, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, and other programs
This page lists all of the free Serif Software. Click on the image of the software you wish to see a tutorial on. This will take you to a page listing installation tips, tutorials, FAQs, downloads, and information about upgrading to a newer purchased (non-free) version.
"actDEN currrently offers seven software tutorials, produced in conjunction with Microsoft K-12 Education." Tutorials are for Internet Explorer 5; Internet Explorer 4; Outlook Express; PowerPoint 98; FrontPage 2000; FrontPage 98; and Office 2000.
internet4classrooms offers online tutorials for both the Macintosh and the PC and the following software applications: Claris Home Page; Dreamweaver; HyperStudio; Inspiration; Internet Explorer; Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Works; Netscape; and WebQuest.
While this site is aimed at teachers in K-12, it does have some useful explanations and resources.
