The College Reading & Writing Center provides instructional support in reading, writing, and oral communication across the curriculum to all Chattanooga State students in their educational endeavors while assisting faculty by offering tutorial assistance and supplemental materials to support classroom instruction.

Tutoring supplements but is never a substitute for classroom instruction. The Reading & Writing Center Tutors--Professional, Peer, and Faculty--assist students on a drop-in basis in reading, writing, and oral communication.

Reading

• Provide assistance with problems identified by instructors through diagnostic reading tests
• Guide through reading exercises to improve problem areas
• Direct to computerized software for interactive reading activities

Oral Communication

• Encourage students through the learning process as a whole
• Provide resources to help students cope with speech anxiety
• Provide individualized help in techniques for coping with speech anxiety, revision of speech outlines, and opportunities for practice and feedback regarding presentation skills

Writing

• Provide assistance with problems identified by instructors through diagnostic grammar tests, essays, etc.
• Guide through writing and grammar exercises to improve problem areas
• Clarify the writing process for students
• Guide students through portions of an essay draft, such as the introduction, body, or conclusion
• Assist in mastery of MLA style
• Provide basic computer instruction in MSOffice^© products and Internet Explorer^© as required by specific class assignments
