Dr. Peggy Strickland of Gainesville State College, Georgia, has created a series of PowerPoints on reading topics: Vocabulary in Context, Pronoun Reference, Restatement, Test Taking Hints, Main Idea/Supporting Details, Annotation/Summary, Patterns of Organization, Inference, Figurative Language, Fact and Opinion, Purpose and Tone, Graphics.
This website by the Reading Dept. at Cerritos College, Norwalk, CA, contains tutorials on reading for main ideas through a study of topics, topic sentences, and vocabulary in context.
The Jefferson Community College Constructing Meaning website has links to resources for reading and study skills. Unfortunately, a number of the links no longer appear to be active.
"This Companion Website is designed to help students test themselves and receive instant feedback on exercise work in ten of the major readings skills areas." A drop down list for the various exercises appears near the bottom of the page.
"21st Century Literacies refer to the skills needed to flourish in today's society and in the future." The site "focus[es] on four 21st century literacies - information, media, multicultural, and visual."
Although part of a site for chemistry students, this page contains a variety of links to valuable resources. Reading students will especially be interested in the links for Critical Thinking, Reading Science, Reading, SQ3R, Reading Textbooks, Underlining, and Vocabulary.
Vocabulary Building
Focuses on vocabulary building for the SAT/GRE.
