Program Description

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program now has two program offerings:
  • General Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Abdomen, Small Parts, Obstetrics & Gynecology)
  • Cardiovascular Sonography (Adult Echocardiography and Visceral & Peripheral Vascular Sonography)

Each of these program offerings begins each fall semester and is a 12-month program, providing specialty education to post-associate health care professionals. Full-time student status is required. The program includes both classroom and clinical assignments, equaling 40 hours of program time per week, excluding breaks. Classes are conducted two (2) days every other week, with a third laboratory day once per month. Clinical experience is obtained at approved clinical affiliates within the region for the remaining 1-1/2 weeks of program hours during each two-week cycle. (Follow this link to view a Sample Schedule.)

All courses in the curriculum must be passed with a grade of "C" or higher in order to proceed to the next course in the sequence. Upon program completion, graduates may apply as candidates for certification through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Graduates of the program may also qualify as candidates of sonography certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT).

UPDATE:   Temporarily, the sonography programs will operate on the following program year schedule:
2008-2009:  General Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
2009-2010:  Cardiovascular Sonography Program

We will continue to accept applications for both programs, and will announce whether the General DMS Program will also operate during the 2009-2010 program year in May 2009.  (Anyone accepted into a program that has been placed on an annual holding period will be placed on a waiting list for acceptance into the next available year.)

Clinical Affiliates
Every attempt is made to place a student at a clinic site within that student's geographical area, to minimize student relocation and travel throughout the program year. Many clinical sites are currently available in our region. However, if a student wishes to attend at a particular facility, the program administration will be gladly discuss this option and will explain the process of affiliation.  (Please follow the Clinical Affiliates navigational link to the left for additional information.)
