DIVISION HISTORY
The Radiologic Technology program was the first health science program offered by Chattanooga State Technical Community College. It began in 1972 as an option in the Nuclear Technology (Health Physics) Program. It became a stand-alone program in 1975 with the creation of a Division of Life and Health Sciences, which began with four programs in place.
By 1977, the division had grown to include Dental Hygiene and Assisting, Medical Records Technician, Mental Health Associate, Orthopedic Physician's Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, and Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife Management, and all biological sciences.
The Nursing Division was developed in 1982 by Dr. Tanya Gorman. In 1988 the Nursing Program and the Allied Health Programs merged to create the Nursing and Allied Health Division. Since those 5 initial programs offered here at Chattanooga State, the NAH Division has grown with the needs of the healthcare system and now offers 21 disciplines in various health related fields. Also in 1988, the Regional Program Concept was created with the MRI program. The Division desired to meet not only the needs of the immediate community, but the Southeast region as well.
Today, the Division offers 6 different regional programs that cover a 6 state area surrounding Tennessee.
Currently, the Division has 40 full-time faculty and 80 part-time faculty that are involved with student learning. We maintain very low student to instructor ratios, which means we can provide the necessary contact needed in learning any challenging field. With over 230 graduates each year, we offer the highest number of graduates in career programs in the region.
Each year approximately 600 students attend health related courses at one of the six CSTCC campuses (East,
Eastgate Town Center, Main, Dayton, Kimball or Sequatchie/Bledsoe).
The Chattanooga Region is a wonderful place to relocate for courses. The area has a population of approximately 350,000 with a wide range of activities available within driving distance: kayaking, river rafting, hiking, cycling, as well as public entertainment such as the IMAX Theater, The Tennessee Aquarium, The Lookout Baseball Team, and with Chattanooga's central location between Birmingham, AL; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; Knoxville, TN; the range of activities expands even further.
